Erika Arnold-McEwan joins board, brings expertise in trauma healing
/When did you join the Mwendo Congo board of directors? What roles have you had? I became a Mwendo Congo board member in January 2026. I have been a part of the Mwendo Congo Trauma Bridge group since 2023.
Tell us about your education and work background. How does that connect to the work we support in the Dem. Republic of Congo (DRC)? I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in clinical social work. I have worked in various community and private practice settings for the past 22 years, providing trauma-focused therapies. I earned a Certificate in Global Mental Health in 2022 with the hope of expanding mental health services to developing geographic areas. More specifically, I have a profound respect for African people, who have demonstrated strength and resilience despite many decades of oppression and conflict.
What else do you do in your life - for fun and for service to others? My husband and I recently became empty nesters after raising 4 children. Now that I have more free time, I enjoy hot yoga classes, walks around Minneapolis lakes and along Minnehaha Creek, and reading. I am also in leadership with a non-profit organization that advocates for those pushed to societal margins.
What is your vision for Mwendo Congo into the future? I am hopeful that Mwendo Congo continues to support the expansion of mental health services to trauma survivors in the DRC. Further incorporation of mental health support within educational and vocational training is my primary vision for Mwendo Congo.
